Bird Migration

September 24th, 2006

Today for the first time this year I noticed the birds are starting to gather for their fall migration. Mostly small groups of 25 -50 birds going to meetup with others.

With fall coming, the other good news is the grass has slowed down its growth rate, Hopefully only one more cutting of the pastures. And another good piece of news is I think we have caught the last of the six groundhogs that have been browing under the barn floor . No, we don\’t shoot them . We take them down the road about 3 miles and let them go in the woods. although I have threaten to release them in my neighbors yard if he doesn\’t stop giving me a hard time about my red truck being so dirty..

Watching the spider weave his web

August 22nd, 2006

Last night I saw a very rare sight . As I was leaving the barn thru one of the side doors the outside lights were on and as I opened the door , I could see the relection of light on a spider web hanging down covering a part of the doorway. In the middle of this was a good sizd spider spinning his web,He would start in the middle go to the end and then start going around. Just seeing him spinning out the string of webing behind him as he went along was awesome. One of the many things you never think about but goes on every day in the insect world.
