The Farm The Cheek farm has been in Margaret's
family for over 101 years. Her father and her grandfather
were both dairy farmers. She is one of four children born
in the farm house.
When Margaret and Charlie moved back to the
farm 12 years ago, the barn and the fields were overgrown
with kudzu. Someone said if they wanted to get rid of th
kudzu, they should buy a couple of goats. They bought 2 goats,
then someone gave them 3 more and later those goats had babies.
Today, they have 9 goats and the kudzu is well under control.
Then their neighbors, all dairy farmers, started
asking, "What else are your goats good for?" That's when
Charlie and Margaret started making goats' milk soap.
Today, after 10 years and many batches of trial
and error, they have perfected a unique bar of all natural
goat milk soap that not contain any additives, colorants,
preservatives, stablizers, or chemicals. It is highly praised
for its moisturizing properties.
The Cud-Zu Goat Farm is located near Hillsborough,
North Carolina, just outside of Chapel Hill and the Research
Triangle Park. It has been in the Cheek family for generations.
The house (97 years old) was built by Margaret's grandfather
and the barn (70 years old) was built by Margaret's father.
The lumber was cut from the woods on the farm. This was back
in the days when barns (and houses) were built to last.
When Margaret and Charlie moved back to the farm in 1994,
the first thing they did was buy some goats to eat the kudzu
that had taken over the fields and barn. The second task
was to rebuild the barn. Now they have great goats in a great
barn - people don't build 'em like that anymore.
The History of the
Farm's Red Barn
This is our red barn. There is
a long history behind this barn...it wasn't always red....
Margaret's father built the barn 70 years
ago from lumber on the farm. Over the years, due to natural
wear
and tear and disuse, the barn walls fell into bad repair.
However, the oak frame was just as good as the day it was
built. After a tornado came through and ripped out the front
of the barn, we rebuilt the ends and restored it to its
original
condition.
Goat Milk Soap
and Your Skin
Our unique soap is developed, handcrafted
and is cut on our farm using only pure, natural ingredients.
Goats' milk makes the soap both moisturizing and
soothing, with a typical bar lasting much longer
than a normal store-bought bar.
The fat molecules of the goats' milk
are very small, and when combined with the olive oil,
form a gentle moisturizer on your skin.
